Our History

The Port Authority Shomrim Society, organized in 1963, is a social and fraternal organization whose members come from the diverse civilian, field services and police ranks of the Port Authority. Members of the Shomrim Society enjoy meeting new and old friends at the Society's functions and general membership meetings. Discussions often center on ideas, suggestions and topics of concern they share as Port Authority employees and as members of the Jewish Community.

The Shomrim Society offers members and their families the opportunity to benefit from this association in several ways. One important feature is a yearly scholarship, awarded to a student demonstrating academic excellence, as selected by the Scholarship Fund Committee. The selected candidate is honored at the Shomrim Society's Annual Scholarship fund and Fellowship Breakfast, and all members' college age children are encouraged to participate. The Annual Breakfast is a gathering of members, VIP's of the Port Authority and the representatives of the many fraternal organizations. A guest speaker is invited to lecture on a topic that is of interest and concern to the Jewish community. The annual Chanukah Party is also a favorite for members' children, with toys, refreshments and entertainment provided to celebrate this happy holiday. There are also special events planned throughout the year the membership is informed of through our newsletter, The Scribe.

The Shomrim Society is affiliated with the National Conference of Shomrim Societies, which sponsors many events, such as the Salute to Israel Parade and the Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony. All members of the Port Authority Shomrim Society are members of the National organization, which have branches in most U.S. cities.

Regular meetings of the Port Authority Employees Shomrim Society are held at different P.A. facilities, with the time and location announced through the mail, in the newsletter, and on our web site. All members are welcomed and encouraged to participate.
